In recent months, Los Cristianos has undergone several renovations and improvements to increase its appeal to tourists. Sebastian Ledesman, Tourism Infrastructure Chief, oversaw the improvements and describes the work as 'a model of quality'. Recent renovations have improved tourist activity and the local economy for this small, quaint town. One of the most notable improvements in Los Cristianos is the renovation of the twenty-year-old beach promenade. The existing promenade was repaved, refurnished and made more accessible by means of the beach. New lighting, restrooms and showers help top off some of the more-than-three-million-dollar renovations to the promenade in Los Cristianos.

Los Cristianos is located on the southern coast of Tenerife in the Canary Islands. A relatively small town, with a population of about 12,000, provides tourists a more private, relaxed atmosphere than some of the larger resorts on the island. Its humble beginnings as a fishing village are still evident in some areas of Los Cristianos. Older buildings in the central area of town were created using Canarian architecture native to the Canary Islands.

Two golden sand beaches and a harbor full of brightly painted boats and yachts await the weary traveler. Many local fishermen have turned their hobby of fishing into business opportunities that accommodate tourism. Guided tours include opportunities for tourists to observe dolphin and whales in their natural habitat. Tours often span the circumference of the island and take several hours. Longer tours often offer snacks or meals with comfortable seating while tourists take in the amazing scenery. Sport fishermen can enjoy game fishing trips for several varieties of large game fish.

In addition to cruises and game fishing trips, water sport enthusiasts can enjoy swimming, diving and boating year round. The Canaries are located off the northern coast of Africa in the Atlantic Ocean. Water sport opportunities are nearly endless in this oasis of islands and impressive expanses of crystal blue waters.

Volcanic Vacation Destination

Because the Canary Islands were created by a chain of volcanic activity over hundreds of years, they have some of the most unique scenic opportunities on Earth. Some compare the landscape in certain areas to the landscape of the moon or Mars. Oddly shaped rock formations, tan sandy beaches and natural tunnels increase the feeling of being off-world explorers. Families with young children often nurture the exploring nature of children by helping them explore these areas. Guided tours of the mountainous regions of the islands are among some of the most popular family activities.

Diving is one of the most popular water sports in the Canaries. The volcanic activities that created the islands also created many underwater caves and tunnels that are home to many species of tropical fish and other marine life. Some diving companies offer diving lessons and guided tours of centuries-old shipwrecks as well as underwater caves and tunnels.

In all, seven major islands comprise the Canary Islands. One minor island and several islets add to the appeal of the area. The seven major islands are Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro, Fuerteventura and La Graciosa. Each island has something unique to offer tourists looking for a variety of experiences while on vacation in the Canaries. Most tourists are content to visit the larger islands and stay near the resorts and high population areas. Tours to the other islands and islets are provided by any of several local tour company owners.
